A visitor submitted a question asking for spoilers for Season 2 of the animation. Thank you for visiting! ^_^ The last episode (episode 32) will be shown tomorrow (4 May) and the premonition in the last 5 seconds of episode 31 pretty much confirms they won't change this plot point. But, you never know, many things were changed in the animation.
(Updated 4 May - minor edits)
(Updated 15 Jun - SP episode added)
Spoilers below through Season 2 and Book 2 of the novel.

SPOILERS LAST WARNING

.

Last shot of episode 31.
The subtitle reads: 剑仙陨落, which means, a sword immortal has fallen (i.e. is dead).
Here's a mapping of Season 2 episodes 17-32 to the relevant chapters in the novel. The number in brackets is what's labelled in the episodes of the second half of the season.
* Most of the scenes that are not in the novel are expanded from parts of the narration in various chapters, or added to give some characters more screen time.
If you want to know what happens immediately after the end of ep 32, start reading from ch 181 onwards. However, the fight sequences of the Heroes Banquet are completely messed up in the donghua, so you may be confused why Li Hanyi and Xie Xuan are in Lei Clan. So, it's better to read the whole battle in the novel from ch 159 onwards.
The continuation of Ye Xiaoying's visit to Snow Moon City in ep 22 as well as the Emperor's task for Lanyue Marquis in ep 23 is also told from ch 182 onwards.
Added 15 Jun - the Special Episode ties up the last few chapters of the second arc and sets up the third arc and Season 3. To continue the story, start reading from ch 195 onwards. However, I still recommend reading at least 193-194 for the full explanation of the Immortal Mountain Beyond the Sea.

Zhao Yuzhen died to save Li Hanyi. But, he was always destined to die when he left Qingcheng Mountain so if his death had to mean something, at least he died saving the love of his life. How did he die? In the fight with Su Changhe and the Tang Clan elders, he stepped into the Spirit Wandering Profound Realm for a moment to stop the Pear Blossom Needles, plus he received a blow from Su Changhe's palm. Hence, he suffered a severe backlash and internal injuries but instead of recuperating, he expanded the last of his life force to expel the Pear Blossom Needle from Li Hanyi's body. Why did he have to die? Because that was his fate.
Li Hanyi went on a rampage to kill Su Changhe but the Patriarch never confronted her again. Instead, he sent Hidden River's top assassins to kill Li Hanyi. Lei Hong saved her with Xie Xuan's help. Wuxin, Li Fansong and Fei Xuan also assisted. Afterwards, Wuxin brought Li Hanyi back to Snow Moon City. Although she survived, she was grievously injured and lost most of her strength. After Lei Wujie returned to Snow Moon City, they travelled back to Sword Heart Tomb where she stayed to recover. She unofficially retired from the martial world.
Lei Hong left after saving Li Hanyi but before that, they shared a brief conversation and cleared things up. Li Hanyi told him that she was in love with Zhao Yuzhen before they met so he never had a chance. Lei Hong accepted this and returned to the Lei Clan. Later, Lei Yunhe visited Sword Heart Tomb to request for a sword on Lei Hong's behalf. Li Suwang forged a unique sword for him and Lei Hong gained the title of Thunder Sword Immortal (Lei means thunder). He also retired from the martial world to practice his sword and Lei Yunhe continued as Acting Clan Leader.
Su Changhe ended up in Heavenly Revelations City to assist Xiao Yu in the fight for the throne. Contrary to his promise, he didn't kill Wuxin when they met again because Wuxin had already been taken by Xiao Yu. Su Changhe supplied his assassins from Hidden River to Xiao Yu's army. However, he went too far and betrayed the Hidden River. In the end, Su Changhe was killed by Su Muyu with the help of Li Fansong, Fei Xuan and Tang Ze. They avenged their masters, after all.
